Tap a word to see what it means.
Saturday morning, the day of the festival. The sun is out. On the way to the market square, you and Elzė pass the old toy and gift shop. Mrs Stasė is standing in the doorway.
StasėLabas rytas! Į šventę?
Good morning! Off to the festival?
ElzėLabas rytas, ponia Stase! Taip. Šįvakar Jonas gros pirmas!
Good morning, Mrs Stasė! Yes. Tonight Jonas is playing first!
StasėJonukas? Šįvakar? Užeikite, užeikite!
Little Jonas? Tonight? Come in, come in!
Inside, the shop smells of wood and old paper. Mrs Stasė sits down behind her counter and takes off her glasses.
StasėAš pažįstu Jonuką labai seniai. Tada jam buvo dešimt metų.
I've known little Jonas for a very long time. Back then he was ten.

StasėElze, ar tu matei jo nuotrauką? Su trimitu, prie lango?
Elzė, have you seen his photo? With the trumpet, at the window?
ElzėMačiau! Ir su baisia šukuosena!
I have! And with a terrible haircut!
Tada jis gyveno septintame name, taip?
He lived at number 7 then, didn't he?
Tada jis gyveno septintame name, taip?
He lived at number 7 then, didn't he?
StasėTaip. Su mama ir tėčiu, antrame aukšte. Jūsų bute.
Yes. With his mum and dad, one floor above ground level. In your flat.
Žinau. Jonas man sakė.
I know. Jonas told me.
Žinau. Jonas man sakė.
I know. Jonas told me.
StasėJo mama ir tėtis daug dirbo. Visą dieną, kiekvieną dieną.
His mum and dad worked a lot. All day, every day.
StasėO Jonukas po mokyklos buvo vienas. Vienas su trimitu.
And after school little Jonas was on his own. On his own with a trumpet.
ElzėSu trimitu? Iš kur jis turėjo trimitą?
With a trumpet? Where did he get a trumpet?
StasėTrimitas buvo Onos. Mažas, senas trimitas. Ona jam jį davė.
The trumpet was Ona's. A small, old trumpet. Ona gave it to him.
ElzėMočiutės? O iš kur močiutė turėjo trimitą?
Grandma's? And where did Grandma get a trumpet?
StasėNežinau. Ona viską žino, o aš ne.
I don't know. Ona knows everything, and I don't.

StasėKiekvieną dieną jis sėdėjo ant laiptų, po mano langu, ir grojo.
Every day he sat on the steps under my window and played.
StasėPirma jis grojo labai blogai. Labai garsiai ir labai blogai!
At first he played very badly. Very loudly and very badly!
Ir jūs klausėtės? Kiekvieną dieną?
And you listened? Every day?
Ir jūs klausėtės? Kiekvieną dieną?
And you listened? Every day?
StasėKlausiausi. Ką aš galėjau daryti? Aš čia dirbau.
I listened. What could I do? I worked here.
StasėPaskui jis grojo geriau. O tada buvo miesto šventė.
After a while he played better. And then came the town festival.
ElzėIr jis grojo šventėje?
And he played at the festival?
StasėGrojo. Aikštėje, su orkestru. Pirmą kartą.
He did. On the square, with the orchestra. For the first time.

StasėPirma buvo labai blogai. Jis labai bijojo. Aikštėje buvo daug žmonių.
At first it was very bad. He was very frightened. There were lots of people on the square.
StasėOrkestras grojo vieną dainą, o Jonukas – kitą. Ne tą!
The orchestra played one song, and little Jonas another. The wrong one!
StasėPaskui lijo. Labai lijo! Ir daug žmonių išėjo namo.
Then it rained. It poured! And lots of people went home.
StasėJonukas buvo šlapias ir labai liūdnas. Jis irgi norėjo eiti namo.
Little Jonas was wet and very sad. He wanted to go home too.
ElzėO močiutė? Kur buvo močiutė?
And Grandma? Where was Grandma?
StasėOna sėdėjo ant suoliuko priešais sceną. Su skėčiu.
Ona was sitting on the bench in front of the stage. With an umbrella.
StasėJi sakė: „Jonuk, ne namo! Grok!“
She said: 'Jonas, you're not going home! Play!'
Ir jis grojo?
And he played?
Ir jis grojo?
And he played?

StasėGrojo. Lietuje. Tą pačią dainą kaip orkestras. Ir labai gražiai.
He did. In the rain. The same song as the orchestra. And very beautifully.
StasėPagaliau lietus baigėsi, ir žmonės grįžo.
At last the rain stopped, and the people came back.
StasėMes visi klausėmės. O paskui visa aikštė dainavo.
We all listened. And then the whole square sang.
ElzėIr jūs dainavote, ponia Stase?
And did you sing, Mrs Stasė?
StasėŽinoma! Aš dainavau, Ona dainavo, mes visi dainavome.
Of course! I sang, Ona sang, we all sang.
O jo mama ir tėtis? Jie ten buvo?
And his mum and dad? Were they there?
O jo mama ir tėtis? Jie ten buvo?
And his mum and dad? Were they there?
StasėJie atėjo po darbo, vėlai. Bet paskutinę dainą jie girdėjo.
They came after work, late. But they heard the last song.

StasėTėtis buvo labai laimingas. Paskui tėvai nupirko Jonukui naują, didelį trimitą.
His dad was very happy. Afterwards his parents bought little Jonas a new, big trumpet.
ElzėO mažas trimitas?
And the little trumpet?
StasėMažas liko pas Oną. Gal jis dar ten. Kas žino?
The little one stayed with Ona. Maybe it's still there. Who knows?
ElzėMočiutė žino. Močiutė viską žino!
Grandma knows. Grandma knows everything!
Mrs Stasė puts her glasses back on and looks out at the sunny street.
StasėO šiandien jis vėl gros aikštėje. Kaip prieš aštuoniolika metų.
And today he'll play on the square again. Like eighteen years ago.
Ar jūs ateisite, ponia Stase?
Will you come, Mrs Stasė?
Ar jūs ateisite, ponia Stase?
Will you come, Mrs Stasė?
StasėAteisiu. Sėdėsiu šalia Onos. O jei lis – turiu skėtį!
I'll come. I'll sit next to Ona. And if it rains, I've got an umbrella!

ElzėIr mes visi dainuosime!
And we'll all sing!
