Unit 5 · Tune your ear · Meet

Tune your ear

Hear the course’s important contrasts before matching sounds to writing.

About this unit

Train your ear before you meet the letters. Persian keeps two a sounds apart, and has two sounds made far back in the mouth.

  • a: short and bright, as in “cat”
    بَد · bad
  • ā: long and deep, as in “father”
    باد · wind
  • rough kh: air rubs, no buzz
    خار · thorn
  • gh: deep in the throat, with a buzz
    غار · cave

بَد and باد differ only in the vowel, خار and غار only in the first sound. Listen to each pair as often as you like.
