About this unit
ن and م join on both sides, so their shape changes with their place in the word. آ is ā at the start of a word.

One letter, several shapes
A letter's shape depends on its neighbours. At the start it joins only the next letter, in the middle both neighbours, at the end only the letter before it.
A dash means the letter never joins the next letter: at the start of a word it looks as when alone, in the middle as at the end.

The dot stays with ن in every shape. You type the plain letter; the font picks the shape.
