ک, گ and ل

About this unit
ک is k, گ is g and ل is l. When ل meets ا, the two letters take a special joined shape: لا.

One letter, several shapes
A letter's shape depends on its neighbours. At the start it joins only the next letter, in the middle both neighbours, at the end only the letter before it.
گ has a second stroke on top.
گُل, flower, and گِل, mud, differ only in the short vowel. Normal print writes both as گل.

گ adds a stroke to ک. Persian ک is the standard code point here, not Arabic ك. ل + ا is shaped automatically as لا; it is still two logical letters. گُل and گِل have different short vowels, shown here; their normal unmarked spelling is the same.
