Unit 20 · ث, ص, ح and ذ · Meet

ث, ص, ح and ذ

Recognise additional s, h and z spellings in whole words.

About this unit

Persian has several letters for the same sound. These four come mostly from Arabic words.

  • ث
s, the same sound as س
    ثَبات · stability
  • صchair
s, the same sound as س
    صَندَلی · chair
  • حtowel
h, the same sound as ه
    حوله · towel
  • ذ
z, the same sound as ز
آذَر · Azar, an Iranian month

One letter, several shapes

A letter's shape depends on its neighbours. At the start it joins only the next letter, in the middle both neighbours, at the end only the letter before it.

A dash means the letter never joins the next letter: at the start of a word it looks as when alone, in the middle as at the end.
