Read the one-dot and three-dot non-joiners.
About this unit
ز is z and ژ is zh. Like ر, they never join the next letter.
- ز
z, as in “zoo”زَن · woman - ژ
zh, like s in “measure”ژاکِت · jacket
One letter, several shapes
A letter's shape depends on its neighbours. At the start it joins only the next letter, in the middle both neighbours, at the end only the letter before it.
A dash means the letter never joins the next letter: at the start of a word it looks as when alone, in the middle as at the end.
No dot, one dot, three dots.
ژ is one of the four letters Persian added to the Arabic alphabet, with پ چ گ.
