б, г, д, л and п

Read five new shapes in a house, park and banana.

About this unit

Five new shapes for familiar sounds: b, g, d, l and p.

  • Ббbanana
    b, as in “bed”
    бана́н · banana
  • Ггmountain
    g, as in “go”
    гора́ · mountain
  • Ддhouse
    d, as in “dog”
    дом · house
  • Ллlamp
    l, as in “full”
    ла́мпа · lamp
  • Ппpark
    p, as in “spin”
    парк · park

The mark in гора́ shows the strong syllable. The weak о before it sounds like a, but the spelling keeps о.

Reading tips

In гора́ the first о is unstressed and sounds a-like; the spelling remains о. Keep the accent as a listening guide. Russian л is hard here; later vowel letters and ь can soften it.

Use a Russian keyboard

The standard Russian layout is ЙЦУКЕН. All guided writing also works with on-screen tiles. Type ё with its own key when practising ё; outside that task е is a common printed replacement. Teaching stress accents are optional input, not extra letters.
