A Saturday morning in spring at Elvira's. Rain runs down the living-room window.
Sábado por la mañana. Llueve. Los tejados están mojados. Lucía ya tiene diez años. Está con su abuela y mira por la ventana.
Saturday morning. It is raining. The roofs are wet. Lucía is ten now. She is with Grandma and looks out of the window.
Lucía
¡Abuela! Otra vez lluvia. ¡Quiero ir al parque con mi amiga!
Grandma! Rain again. I want to go to the park with my friend!
Su amiga tiene un perro. A Lucía le gusta mucho.
Her friend has a dog. Lucía likes him a lot.
Elvira
¿En bicicleta? Hoy no. Hace frío y mucho viento.
By bicycle? Not today. It is cold and very windy.
Lucía
¡Pero tengo impermeable!
But I have a raincoat!
Elvira
Tú sí. Tu bicicleta, no.
You do. Your bicycle does not.
Elvira
Ven, hacemos tortitas. O puedes dibujar.
Come, let us make pancakes. Or you can draw.
The phone. It is Lucía's mother, calling from work.
Marta
Hola, Lucía. Hoy tengo que trabajar hasta la noche. Lo siento.
Hello, Lucía. Today I have to work until evening. Sorry.
Lucía
¿También el sábado? ¡Trabajas mucho, mamá!
Saturday too? You work a lot, Mum!
Marta
Lo sé. Hay personas enfermas. Necesitan ayuda. ¿Qué hacéis?
I know. There are sick people. They need help. What are you doing?
Lucía
¡Tortitas! Ven esta noche. Hay para ti también.
Pancakes! Come tonight. There are some for you too.
Lucía dibuja el mar. Con sol y un castillo de arena enorme.

Lucía
Mira, abuela. Nuestras vacaciones. ¡Así me gustan!
Look, Grandma. Our holiday. This is how I like it!
Lucía
Hace sol. Mamá no trabaja. Está con nosotros todo el día.
It is sunny. Mum is not working. She is with us all day.
Lucía
Por la mañana nadamos. El mar está más frío que el lago, pero me gusta.
In the morning we swim. The sea is colder than the lake, but I like it.
Lucía
Y nado mejor que mamá. Bueno, casi.
And I swim better than Mum. Well, nearly.
Elvira
¿Y tu hermano pequeño?
And your little brother?
Lucía
En mi dibujo ya es grande. Pero todavía no sabe nadar.
In my drawing he is big already. But he cannot swim yet.
Lucía
Hacemos un castillo. Me ayuda. ¡Y come arena!
We make a castle. He helps me. And eats sand!
Lucía
Por la noche hace viento. Por eso llevamos gorros y chaquetas.
At night it is windy. That is why we take hats and jackets.
Elvira
Bien. Cerca del mar hace frío por la noche.
Good. Near the sea it is cold at night.
Lucía
Yo nunca tengo frío en el mar.
I never feel cold by the sea.
Elvira
¿Nunca? ¿Ni con viento y sin chaqueta?
Never? Not even with wind and without a jacket?
Lucía
Bueno, un poco. Muy poco.

Lucía turns the page and draws a small brown dog.
Lucía
Y este es mi perro. ¡Quiero uno así!
And this is my dog. I want one like this!
Elvira
¿Tu perro? ¿Qué dice Michi?
Your dog? What does Michi say?
Lucía
Michi vive aquí. El perro puede vivir en nuestra casa.
Michi lives here. The dog can live at our house.
Elvira
¿Y quién lo pasea? Tus padres trabajan. Tú vas a la escuela.
And who walks him? Your parents work. You go to school.
Lucía
¡Yo! Puedo cuidarlo. A Michi también.
Me! I can look after him. Michi too.
Elvira
Quizá Michi prefiere cuidarte a ti.
Perhaps Michi prefers looking after you.
On the windowsill the grey tomcat opens one eye, looks at the drawing of the dog, and turns his back on it.
Lucía
Mamá dice que necesitamos mucho tiempo para un perro.
Mum says we need lots of time for a dog.
Elvira
Tiene razón. Trabaja mucho. Por eso está cansada.
She is right. She works a lot. That is why she is tired.
Lucía
¡Entonces quiero ser pintora! ¡Trabajo en casa, con mi perro!
Then I want to be a painter! I work at home, with my dog!
Elvira
¿Pintora? ¿No profesora, como yo?
A painter? Not a teacher, like me?
Lucía
No. Los profesores siempre dicen: ¡Ahora no!
No. Teachers always say: Not now!
Elvira
Yo nunca digo ahora no. Digo: ¡Ahora!
I never say not now. I say: Now!
Afternoon. The rain stops, and the sun comes out over the wet roofs.
Lucía
¡Abuela! ¡El sol! ¿Puedo ir en bicicleta ahora?
Grandma! The sun! Can I ride my bicycle now?
Elvira
Sí. Pero lleva gorro y bufanda. Todavía hace frío.
Yes. But take a hat and scarf. It is still cold.
Lucía
¡Hola! ¡Hace sol! ¿Vienes al parque con tu perro?
Hello! It is sunny! Are you coming to the park with your dog?
Evening. Mum comes into the kitchen, tired, with a wet umbrella.
Lucía
¡Mamá! Primero lluvia, luego sol. ¡Y el perro ya me conoce!
Mum! First rain, then sun. And the dog knows me now!
Marta
¿Todavía quieres un perro?
Do you still want a dog?
Lucía
¡Sí! Quizá en verano. Tenemos más tiempo.
Yes! Perhaps in summer. We have more time.
Marta
Quizá. Hablamos luego.
Perhaps. We will talk later.
Michi ve el perro en el cuaderno. Mira para otro lado. Mejor sin perro.
Michi sees the dog in the sketchbook. He looks away. Better without a dog.
