Clock times and parts of the day

Thai often tells time with โมง. At this level, useful forms are เก้าโมง and ห้าโมงครึ่ง. In careful speech, นาฬิกา also appears, but the short forms are very common in daily life.

Minutes can come after the hour: เก้าโมงห้านาที means nine oh five. Half past uses ครึ่ง, so หกโมงครึ่ง means six thirty.

In routines, Thai often keeps the expression short. People say แปดโมงสี่สิบห้า or สิบสองโมงครึ่ง without extra words.

To ask the time, use กี่โมง. To give a time range, use ถึง, as in เก้าโมงถึงห้าโมงครึ่ง.

• เริ่มงานตอน เก้าโมงWork starts at nine.

• พักกลางวันตอน เที่ยงครึ่งLunch break is at half past twelve.

• ผมตื่นตอน หกโมงครึ่ง ครับI get up at half past six.

  ฉันตื่นตอน หกโมงครึ่ง ค่ะI get up at half past six.

• ประชุมตอน สิบเอ็ดโมงThe meeting is at eleven.

• ทำงานถึง ห้าโมงครึ่งWe work until half past five.

• อีกห้านาที จะเก้าโมง ครับIt is five to nine.

  อีกห้านาที จะเก้าโมง ค่ะIt is five to nine.

• วันนี้มาตอน แปดโมงสี่สิบห้านาทีToday I came at eight forty-five.

• ตอนนี้ เจ็ดโมง แล้วIt is seven now.
