Older and younger relatives

Thai often uses short family words. พี่สาว means older sister, and น้องชาย means younger brother. A natural pattern is มี + family word, for example มีพี่สาวหนึ่งคน.

To talk about children, use มีลูก and ไม่มีลูก. If the meaning is 'not yet', Thai often says ยังไม่มีลูก.

Thai often leaves out the subject when it is already clear. So มีพี่สาวหนึ่งคน or ยังไม่มีลูก can sound complete in conversation.

• ผมมีพี่สาวหนึ่งคนครับI have one older sister.

  ฉันมีพี่สาวหนึ่งคนค่ะI have one older sister.

• ผมมีน้องชายหนึ่งคนครับI have one younger brother.

  ฉันมีน้องชายหนึ่งคนค่ะI have one younger brother.

• ผมไม่มีลูกครับI do not have children.

  ฉันไม่มีลูกค่ะI do not have children.

• หมอวรรณมีลูกสองคนDr Wan has two children.

• มะลิมีน้องชายMali has a younger brother.

• คุณยายสมพรมีลูกชายกับลูกสาวGrandma Somporn has a son and a daughter.

• ที่ฮัมบูร์ก ผมมีครอบครัวครับI have family in Hamburg.

  ที่ฮัมบูร์ก ฉันมีครอบครัวค่ะI have family in Hamburg.

• ผมยังไม่มีลูกครับI do not have children yet.

  ฉันยังไม่มีลูกค่ะI do not have children yet.
