The storyA rainy Saturday in hot season. Mali and her best friend wanted to ride their bikes to the park, and her mother Wan is working again. So Mali spends the day at her grandmother's, talking about the summers at the sea, a puppy, and what she wants to be.

Mali draws the sea. There is sun and sand too.
มะลิทุกหน้าร้อน ไปทะเลกัน ทุกคนไปด้วยกัน
Every summer, we go to the sea. Everyone goes together.

ที่นั่นร้อน แล้วแม่ก็ไม่ทำงานด้วย
It’s hot there, and Mum doesn’t work either.

ตอนเช้า ว่ายน้ำ ทะเลหนาวกว่าทะเลสาบ แต่ไม่กลัว
In the morning, we swim. The sea is colder than the lake, but I’m not afraid.

And your younger brother?

He’s still too small. He can’t swim. He eats sand.

After lunch, we make a sandcastle. Every year it’s bigger than before.

It’s windy in the evening. Wear a hat too.

At the sea, I’m not cold.

Last year you were cold. You were blue like the sea.

Mali draws another picture. A little puppy.

I want a puppy. My friend has a puppy too.

ลูกสุนัขเหรอ เสือไม่ชอบหมา
A puppy? Suea doesn’t like dogs.
- มะลิ
เสืออยู่ที่นี่ ลูกสุนัขอยู่บ้านเรา
Suea lives here. The puppy would live at our home.

แล้วใครดู แม่ทำงาน เธอก็ไปโรงเรียน
And who will look after it? Mum works, and you go to school.
- มะลิ
ดูเสือด้วยนะ ทำได้
I look after Suea too. I can do it.
- สมพร
ไม่ใช่ เสือต่างหากที่ดูเธอ
No, it’s Suea who looks after you.
Suea looks at the drawing. He does not like the puppy.
มะลิอยากเป็นศิลปิน ทำงานที่บ้าน แล้วก็ดูลูกสุนัขด้วย
I want to be an artist, work at home, and look after a puppy too.

Not a teacher like Grandma?
- มะลิ
ไม่เอา ครูต้องทีหลังตลอด
No. Teachers always have to say “later.”
อรแพนเค้กที่ร้านหมดแล้ว ที่นี่น่าจะอร่อยกว่า
The pancakes at the café are gone. The ones here are probably better.

With Grandma, it’s not later. It’s now.
It is afternoon. The sun is out. It is not raining.

ยาย ตอนนี้ขี่จักรยานได้ไหม
Grandma, can I ride my bike now?

ได้ ใส่หมวกกับผ้าพันคอด้วย ยังหนาวอยู่
Yes. Put on a hat and a scarf too. It’s still cold.
Mum comes in the evening. Mali shows her the drawing.
มะลิแม่ หน้าร้อน ลูกสุนัขไปทะเลด้วยนะ
Mum, in summer the puppy goes to the sea too, okay?
