Reading tips

Thai normally does not put spaces between words. Spaces separate larger phrases. Familiar word shapes and vowel patterns reveal the boundaries; there is no universal mechanical rule for every string.

Two consonants forming a simple closed syllable often have an unwritten short o: คน reads khon, นม reads nom. An unstressed open syllable often has unwritten a: ถนน is thà-nǒn. Some words have other conventional vowels, such as บริ…; check a word dictionary for exceptions.

Do not add vowel characters when typing these words. Sound out one syllable at a time, then rejoin. รร also has special word-dependent readings, often an /an/ or /a/ sequence; treat it as a pattern to check, not two spoken r sounds.
