A live syllable ends in a long vowel or in m, n, ng, y or w. A dead syllable ends in a stop p, t or k, or a short vowel with a throat closure.
Use the spoken ending, not the last letter’s name. บาท ends in t, so it is dead even though its vowel is long. กิน ends in n, so it is live even though its vowel is short.
ำ, ไ, ใ and เ–า patterns have a nasal or glide ending and are live. Now a tone decision has useful ingredients: initial class, live/dead status, vowel length and any tone mark.
