A little Thai script history
Discover the script’s roots and why several letters share a sound.
Part of a large script family
Thai writing developed from older Khmer writing in the Brahmi-derived family of South and Southeast Asian scripts. The Lao script is a close relative. Thai is not an alphabet made by replacing Latin letters with decorative shapes.
Sukhothai and a famous origin story
The traditional account credits King Ramkhamhaeng with introducing Thai writing in 1283, in the Sukhothai period. The modern forms and spelling conventions developed over later centuries. Treat that date as the traditional origin account, not a claim that today’s entire system appeared unchanged in one year.
Why keep several spellings for one sound?
Old sound distinctions and spelling traditions survive in letters that now share a sound. Some preserve the spelling of words inherited or borrowed from Pali and Sanskrit. The consonant spelling also helps determine tone, so matching a sound is not enough to choose any interchangeable letter.
Where you will see it
Thai script is used throughout Thailand for Thai and also for some other languages and religious texts. Regional traditions can use other scripts, such as Tai Tham in the north. This course follows modern Standard Thai rather than teaching every regional writing system.
