You have already heard these sounds. Now organise their letters into three spelling classes: mid, high and low. The class name is not the spoken tone. ขา has a rising tone even though ข is called high class.
| Group | Common initials you know |
|---|---|
| Mid | ก จ ด ต บ ป อ |
| High | ข ฉ ถ ผ ฝ ส ห |
| Low | ค ช ท พ ฟ ซ ฮ ง น ม ย ร ล ว |
Compare ขา and คา: both begin with airy kh, but their tone differs. Listen first, then use the group chart. Less common letters join these same groups in the later alphabet units.
