Reading tips

Thai has five tones: mid →, low ↘, falling ↗↘, high ↗, and rising ↘↗. The arrows are memory aids, not exact pitch measurements. A syllable with no tone mark still has a tone.

Initial classLive, no markDead, short vowelDead, long vowel
MidMidLowLow
HighRisingLowLow
LowMidHighFalling

Work in this order: find the initial consonant and its class; read the vowel and final sound; decide live/dead; check for a mark. With no mark, use this table. Low-class dead syllables need vowel length to choose high or falling.
