Reading tips

–อ · aw-aw / ɔː · Long open o; อ is part of the vowel here.

เ–อะ · oe / ɤ, short · A short central vowel, unrounded.

เ–อ · oe-oe / ɤː · The long central vowel.

็ · shortener · Makes certain vowel patterns short; it is not a tone mark.

The basic vowel system has nine short/long pairs. The consonant position is shown by –. Use the table as a workshop reference; the changing written shape does not necessarily change the vowel quality.

Short patternLong patternSound
–ะ / –ั––าa / aa
–ิ–ีi / ii
–ึ–ือ / –ื–ue / uue
–ุ–ูu / uu
เ–ะ / เ–็–เ–e / ee
แ–ะ / แ–็–แ–ae / aeae
โ–ะ / often unwritten before a finalโ–o / oo
เ–าะ / –็อ––อaw / aw-aw
เ–อะเ–อ / เ–ิ– before many finalsoe / oe-oe

For เ–อ before many finals, the อ disappears and ิ appears: เดิน has the long central vowel, not an ordinary i. Before final ย, compare เคย. Shortener ็ is usually omitted when a tone mark takes its place; learn those word spellings as they occur.

เยอะ supplies the short เ–อะ vowel. เดิน supplies its long central counterpart before a final consonant. Compare the whole-word recordings: the written ิ in เดิน belongs to this long central pattern, not ordinary i.
