A Saturday morning in spring at Ayşe's. Rain runs down the living-room window.
Cumartesi. Dışarıda yağmur yağıyor. Çok soğuk. Elif pencerenin yanında oturuyor. On yaşında. Bugün mutlu değil.
It's Saturday. It's raining outside, and it's very cold. Elif is sitting at the window. She's ten. Today she's not happy.
Elif
Anneanne, neden yine yağmur var? Bugün Defne'yle bisikletle parka gitmek istiyoruz!
Grandma, why is it raining again? Today Defne and I want to ride our bikes to the park!
Defne Elif'in okul arkadaşı. Küçük bir köpeği var.
Defne is Elif’s school friend. She has a little dog.
Ayşe
Bisikletle mi? Bugün olmaz, Elif. Çok soğuk. Rüzgâr da var.
By bike? Not today, Elif. It's too cold. And it's windy outside.
Elif
Ama yağmurluğum var! Güneş lazım değil!
But I've got a raincoat! I don't need the sun!
Ayşe
Senin yağmurluğun var. Bisikletinin yok.
You've got a raincoat. But the bike hasn't.
Ayşe
Bugün resim yapabilirsin. Bana yardım da edebilirsin. Krep yapıyorum.
Today you can draw, or help me. I'm making pancakes.
The landlady's phone rings. It is Selin, Elif's mother, calling from work.
Selin
Merhaba, Elif. Özür dilerim. Bugün yine çalışıyorum. Akşama kadar.
Hi, Elif. I'm sorry, I'm working again today. Until this evening.
Elif
Yine mi? Anne, hep çalışıyorsun! Cumartesi de!
Again? Mum, you're always working! Even on Saturday!
Selin
Biliyorum. Ama insanlara yardım etmeliyim. Anneannenle krep mi yapıyorsunuz?
I know. But I have to help people. Are you and Grandma making pancakes?
Elif
Evet. Anne, bu akşam gel! Çok krep var.
Yes. Mum, come this evening! There are lots of pancakes.
Mutfakta Elif deniz, güneş ve kum çiziyor.
In the kitchen, Elif draws the sea, the sun and sand.
Elif
Bak, anneanne! Her yaz bütün aile denize gidiyoruz.
Look, Grandma! Every summer the whole family goes to the sea.
Elif
Orada sıcak. Annem çalışmıyor. Bütün gün bizimle!
It's hot there, and Mum doesn't work. She's with us all day!
Elif
Sabah yüzüyoruz. Deniz gölden daha soğuk. Ama korkmuyorum.
In the morning we swim. The sea is colder than the lake, but I'm not afraid.
Elif
Annemden daha iyi yüzebilirim!
I can swim better than Mum!
Ayşe
Erkek kardeşin ne yapıyor?
And your brother?
Elif
O çok küçük. Yüzemez. Sadece kum yiyor!
He's still too little. He can't swim. He just eats sand!
Elif
Öğle yemeğinden sonra kumdan ev yapıyoruz. Her yaz daha büyük!
After lunch we make a house out of sand. A bigger one every summer!
Elif
Akşam denizde rüzgâr var. Annem hep Elif, şapkanı ve ceketini al diyor.
In the evening it's windy by the sea, so Mum always says: 'Elif, your hat! And your jacket!'
Ayşe
Annen haklı. Akşam denizde sıcak giysi lazım.
Your mum is right. In the evening by the sea you need warm clothes.
Elif
Ama ben denizde hiç üşümüyorum!
But I'm never cold by the sea!
Ayşe
Hiç mi? Geçen yıl deniz gibi maviydin!
Never? Last year you were blue like the sea!
Elif
Hayır! Yani... Sadece biraz.
I wasn't! Well... only a little.
Elif turns the page and draws a small brown dog with big ears.
Elif
Anneanne, bak! Küçük köpek! Defne'nin köpeği gibi. Çok köpek istiyorum!
Grandma, look: a puppy! Like Defne's. I really want a puppy!
Ayşe
Köpek mi? Tekir ne yapacak? Köpekleri sevmiyor.
A puppy? And Tekir? Tekir doesn't like dogs.
Elif
Tekir burada oturuyor. Köpek bizim evimizde oturabilir!
Tekir lives here. And the puppy can live in our flat!
Ayşe
Ayşe kim bakacak? Annen baban çalışıyor. Sen okuldasın.
And who looks after it? Your parents work, and you're at school.
Elif
Hayvanlara bakabilirim! Her gün Tekir'e bakıyorum!
I know how to look after animals! I look after Tekir every day!
Ayşe
Hayır, Elif. Tekir sana bakıyor.
No, Elif. Tekir looks after you.
On the windowsill the grey tomcat opens one eye, looks at the drawing of the dog, and turns his back on it.
Elif
Annem köpeğe vakit lazım, benim vaktim yok diyor.
Mum says: 'A dog needs time, and I don't have time.'
Ayşe
Doğru. Annen çok çalışıyor. Bu yüzden yorgun.
That's true. Your mum works a lot, that's why she's tired.
Elif
Bu yüzden ressam olmak istiyorum. Ressam evde çalışıyor. Köpeğe bakabilir!
That's why I want to be a painter. A painter works at home and can look after a puppy!
Ayşe
Ressam mı? Anneannen gibi öğretmen değil mi?
A painter? Not a teacher, like your grandma?
Elif
Hayır! Öğretmenler hep sonra diyor.
No! Teachers always say 'later'.
Ayşe
Ben hiç sonra demem. Şimdi derim!
I never say 'later'. I say: 'Now!'
Afternoon. The rain stops, and the sun comes out over the wet roofs.
Elif
Anneanne, güneş var! Şimdi bisiklete binebilir miyim?
Grandma, the sun! Can I ride my bike now?
Ayşe
Evet. Ama şapka ve atkıyla. Çünkü dışarısı hâlâ soğuk.
You can. But with a hat and a scarf, because it's still cold outside.
Elif
Defne! Güneş var! Köpekle parka gel!
Defne! The sun's out! Come to the park with the puppy!
Evening. Selin comes into the kitchen, tired, with a wet umbrella.
Elif
Anne! Sabah yağmur vardı, sonra güneş. Artık Defne'nin köpeği arkadaşım!
Mum! In the morning there was rain, then sun. And Defne's puppy is my friend now!
Selin
Yine köpek istiyorsun, değil mi?
And you want a puppy again, don't you?
Elif
Evet. Ama yazın, denizde! Köpek için deniz şehirden daha iyi.
Yes. But in summer, by the sea! A puppy is better off there than in town.
Selin
Belki, Elif. Belki.
Maybe, Elif. Maybe.
Tekir defterdeki köpeğe bakıyor. Hiç sevmiyor.
Tekir looks at the puppy in Elif's sketchbook. He doesn't like it at all.
