Monday of festival week, half past seven in the morning. The waiting room of the Çınarkent practice is already full.
Şenlik haftası. Pazartesi. Doktor Selin klinikte. Hep erken geliyor.
Festival week. Monday. Doctor Selin is at the clinic. She always arrives early.
Leyla
Günaydın, doktor! Bugün kırk hasta var.
Good morning, doctor! Forty patients today.
Selin
Kırk mı? Peki. Yediye kadar çalışıyoruz. İlk hasta, lütfen!
Forty? Well, we work until seven. First patient, please!
An old man with a walking stick comes in very slowly and sits down with a happy sigh.
ponas Ahmet
Merhaba, doktor! Yine ben.
Good day, doctor! It's me again.
Selin
Aa, Ahmet Bey! Haftada iki kez buradasınız. Nasılsınız?
Oh, Ahmet Bey! You're here twice a week. How do you feel?
ponas Ahmet
Kötü. Sırtım, bacağım, başım ağrıyor.
Bad. My back hurts. And my leg. And my head.
Selin
Başınız da mı? Peki. Derin nefes alın. Bir kez daha.
Your head too? All right. Breathe in deeply... Once more.
ponas Ahmet
Doktor, çocuklarım uzakta. Evde çok sıkılıyorum.
Doctor, my children are far away. At home I'm very bored.
Selin
Hasta değilsiniz. Sadece sıkılıyorsunuz.
You aren't ill. You're just bored.
Selin
İşte reçetem: Her sabah Zeynep'in kafesi. Kahve, kek ve insanlar.
Here's my prescription: every morning, Zeynep's café. Coffee, cake and people.
ponas Ahmet
İlaç yerine kek mi? Bu reçeteyi çok seviyorum!
Cake as medicine? I like this prescription very much!
He goes off, smiling. The receptionist shakes her head.
Selin
Leyla, ona ilaç lazım değil. İnsanlar lazım.
Leyla, he doesn't need medicine. He needs people.
More patients: a cough, a cut finger, a baby who will not stop crying. At eleven, a student comes in with a heavy rucksack.
Gintarė
Merhaba. Her gün başım ağrıyor.
Good day. I have a headache. Every day.
Selin
Kaç saat uyuyorsunuz?
How many hours do you sleep?
Gintarė
Dört. Cuma sınavım var. Bu yüzden gece çalışıyorum.
Four. I have an exam on Friday, so I study at night.
Selin
Dört mü? Çok az. Yorgun baş öğrenemez.
Four? Too little. A tired head learns nothing.
Selin
Gece sekiz saat uyuyun. Çok su için.
Sleep eight hours a night and drink a lot of water.
One o'clock. The waiting room is still full. The receptionist puts her head round the door.
Leyla
Doktor, yine öğle yemeği yemiyorsunuz!
Doctor, you're not having lunch again!
Selin
Vaktim yok, Leyla. Belki sonra.
I haven't got time, Leyla. Maybe later.
Leyla
Anneniz telefonda. Bugün üçüncü kez. Ne söyleyeyim?
Your mother is on the phone. The third time today. What shall I tell her?
The doctor sighs, smiles and picks up the phone.
Ayşe
Selin, yine yemek yemiyorsun. Biliyorum. Leyla her şeyi söylüyor.
Selin, you're not eating again. I know: Leyla tells me everything.
Ayşe
Dörtte yeni komşum geliyor. Hasta.
And at four my new neighbour is coming to see you. They're ill.
Selin
Biliyorum, anne. Ben de her şeyi biliyorum.
I know, Mum. I know everything too.
Ayşe
Bu akşam ne zaman geliyorsun? Elif soruyor.
And this evening? Elif is asking when you're coming.
Selin
Yedide, anne. Senin evine.
At seven, Mum. To your place.
Ayşe
Hep yedi diyorsun. Dokuzda geliyorsun.
You always say seven. And you come at nine.
Afternoon: more patients, more tea, still no lunch. At four, the new neighbour from number 7 comes in, with a sore throat and a story about a trumpet. At half past seven, the last patient goes home.
Eight o'clock, in Ayşe's living room at number 7. Elif sits at the table with her yellow sketchbook. A plate of pancakes is waiting.
Elif
Anne! Yedi dedin!
Mum! You said seven!
Selin
Özür dilerim, Elif. Bugün kırk hasta vardı.
Sorry, Elif. There were forty patients today.
Elif
Kırk hasta! Beni sadece akşam görüyorsun.
Forty patients! And me you only see in the evening.
Ayşe
Otur, kızım. Ye. Doktor da yemek yemeli.
Sit down, my girl. Eat. A doctor has to eat too.
Selin
Anne, çocuk değilim. Kırk dört yaşındayım!
Mum, I'm not a child. I'm forty-four!
Ayşe
Benim çocuğumsun. Yemek yemelisin.
You're my child, and you need to eat.
Elif
Anne, neden doktorsun?
Mum, why are you a doctor?
Selin
Çocukken anneannen öğretmendi. Bütün gün okuldaydı.
When I was little, like you, Grandma was a teacher. She was at school all day.
Selin
Akşam çok yorgundu. Ben de üzgündüm.
In the evening she was very tired, and I was sad.
Selin
Ben doktordum. Anneannem hastamdı. Bebeğim hemşiremdi.
So I was the doctor. Grandma was my patient, and my doll was the nurse.
Ayşe
Evet. Reçete hep aynıydı: Çay ve yatak.
Yes. And the prescription was always the same: tea and bed.
Selin
İnsanlar iyi olsun istiyorum. Bu yüzden doktorum.
I like it when people feel better. That's why I'm a doctor.
Elif
Cumartesi çocuklarla şarkı söyleyeceğim! Gelecek misin?
I will sing with the children on Saturday! Will you come?
Selin
Cumartesi mi? Cumartesi çalışıyorum...
On Saturday? On Saturday I work until...
Elif
Anne! Hep çalışıyorsun!
Mum! You're always working!
Selin looks at her daughter, then at her mother. For once, Ayşe says nothing.
Selin
Peki. Cumartesi çalışmıyorum. Hepimiz şenliğe geliyoruz. Sen, ben, baban, kardeşin.
All right. On Saturday I'm not working. We're all coming to the festival: you, me, Dad and your brother.
Ayşe
Ben de tabii! Şenlikte hep ben varım. Her şeyi görüyorum, biliyorum.
And me? I'm always at the festival. I see everything and I know everything.
Ayşe
Şimdi ikiniz de yiyin! Çok incesiniz.
And now eat, both of you! You're too thin.
Üçü de krep yiyor. Selin üçüncü krebi yiyor.
All three of them eat pancakes. Selin is already on her third.
